Internal Family Systems, often known as IFS, is a gentle therapeutic approach that helps you understand the different “parts” of you that may be responding to grief. Rather than trying to push difficult feelings away, IFS invites curiosity, compassion, and care towards each part of your inner experience.
After pet bereavement, one part of you may feel devastated and unable to imagine life without your companion. Another part may feel guilty; questioning decisions made near the end of your pet’s life. Another part may try to stay busy, minimise the loss, or tell you that you “should be over it by now”. IFS offers a way to listen to these parts without judgement, so that grief can be held with more tenderness and less inner conflict.
IFS therapy for pet bereavement is not about rushing you through grief or encouraging you to “move on”. Instead, it offers a safe and compassionate space to understand what is happening inside, at a pace that feels manageable.
In IFS, every part of you is welcome. We do not force feelings, analyse you from a distance, or decide what your grief should look like. We listen carefully to the parts that are hurting, the parts that are trying to protect you, and the parts that may feel conflicted about what happened.
Over time, this can help you relate to your grief with more compassion, soften harsh self-criticism, and feel less alone inside. The aim is not to erase your love or forget your companion, but to help you carry the loss in a way that feels kinder and more integrated.
If you are grieving the loss of a much-loved pet, you do not have to minimise your pain or go through it alone. IFS Therapy can offer a steady, understanding space where your relationship with your animal companion is honoured and your grief is met with care. If this way of working speaks to you, you are welcome to get in touch to arrange an initial conversation. We can explore whether Internal Family Systems therapy feels like the right fit for you.
