The Rewind Technique

What is the Rewind Technique?

The Rewind Technique is an evidenced based psychological intervention commonly used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma. The Rewind Technique heals trauma by allowing individuals to reprocess distressing memories in a safe and controlled environment. By viewing the traumatic event from a detached, observer's perspective, the emotional charge associated with the memory is reduced. This process helps to break the link between the memory and the intense fear or anxiety it once triggered, enabling people to recall the event without being overwhelmed by negative emotions. In doing so, the technique promotes emotional resilience and facilitates recovery from trauma.

Closure Without Disclosure.

One advantage of the Rewind Technique compared to other treatments such as EMDR is that the Rewind Technique is generally less intrusive and does not require individuals to verbally recount their traumatic experience in detail, which can be distressing for some. Additionally, it can often be completed in fewer sessions and is suitable for people who may struggle with direct exposure therapies. This makes it a gentler option for those who feel uncomfortable with more confrontational approaches.

Who Can Benefit from the Rewind Technique?

The Rewind Technique is effective for treating trauma in people who:

  • have directly experienced life-threatening events (survivors).
  • have witnessed such incidents without being directly involved (onlookers).
  • arrived after the event (secondary witnesses), such as emergency responders or relatives who can picture what happened.
  • heard about the event (indirect witnesses), including therapists and healthcare professionals.
  • consider themselves to be perpetrators and/or have committed traumatic acts themselves.

The Aims of the Technique & Training

Our Goal for the Rewind Technique is Twofold:

1. Stop Involuntary Recall: Help you to stop reliving the traumatic event unintentionally,

2. Restore Functioning: Enable you to resume normal activities without fear or anxiety,

for a single event trauma. For multiple event trauma, each traumatic event can be dealt with separately over separate sessions.
